Timeless Timber

The legend behind Timeless Timber™ Drums made by Morgan Drums originated in the late 1800's when the logging industry was at its highest peak in history. Huge quantities of wood were harvested at that time and floated by raft for processing. Many logs sank to the murky depths of the lakes surrounding the mills and were forgotten until 1991 when diver Scott Mitchen uncovered them at the bottom of Lake Superior. The logs were not only still useable, but were date stamped, (as was the custom of the time) and the wood types extremely rare. The wood had been preserved in pristine condition due to being entombed in the icy oxygen-depleted environment. In addition, bacteria had stripped all of the impurities, leaving billions of microscopic chambers throughout the wood. These chambers produce a rich resonance and tone depth unheard before now. Forest growth in the 1800's was dense. Trees had intense competition for sunlight, and therefore grew slowly. Timeless Timber™ is approximately 400 - 600 years in age depending on the particular piece, and has 40 to 50 growth rings per inch, compared with wood growing today, which has roughly 4 to 6 growth rings per inch. Learning of Mitchen's find, Morgan Drums sought and obtained exclusive Hand Drum production rights to Timeless Timber™.

All Morgan Drums are hand crafted. Models are designated by the style of drum, type of wood used (i.e.: Timeless Timber™ or recent wood, and what type of tree) in construction and size of the drum. The effect of this construction is one that allows for a brilliant tone and sustain that rings true and long. The handcrafted body contours ensure comfort and playability second to none.

Models created from Timeless Timber™ as well as recent woods are available. Almost any conceivable custom option is possible, to ensure that each instrument suits the player's exact needs. Whatever your need, just give us a call and we'll discuss it.

The limited supply of the wood will affect the availability of custom built Timeless Timber™ Morgan Drums. Currently, instruments are available in: Birds eye Maple (quarter sawn or natural), Black Ash, Red Phase Flamed Yellow Birch, and Yellow Phase Flamed Birch. Each drum is hand-signed, dated, serial numbered, and comes with a certificate of authenticity detailing the history of the wood selected.
